10 ways to feel powerful, right now.

There’s this feeling I just love…I love feeling powerful. Throughout various points in my life, I was made to feel ashamed-particularly to do with my Asperger’s and the diagnosis. It felt good to take just some power back, to just be happy with myself. As a result of this, I wanted to share my tips with you, about how to feel powerful.

1. Put those heels on.

And I don’t mean heels that you can’t walk in, or that cause you a lot of pain. To me, height gives me just a dash of confidence; it makes me stand to attention, push my shoulders back. I think this is also reflected in my body language; I become assertive, more commanding.

2. Pair the heels with a vivid lip colour.

It was on a podcast that I first heard this idea; apparently wearing a bright lip colour can uplift your mood. This has worked for me to the extent that I feel in control, ready for whatever challenge I know will happen that day. my favourite is a red lipstick, with black eyeliner, to create a Hollywood look.

3. Change the story you tell yourself.

This was a tip I read in Derren Brown’s book, Happy. if you want to accomplish something, but feel that you’d never be able to do it, change the story you tell yourself. Tell yourself that you can do it, that you should not be ashamed.

4. Listen to music.

Ah, music, music, music. To me, music is what makes me happy. I love rock bands such as Queen, Genesis, Dire Straits. But I also adore Carly Simon, Beyonce, Anastacia, Kerry Ellis. Music gets us in the mood…

5. Look at Gala Darling’s blog.

Gala Darling is a very wise woman. As a writer, she promotes ‘Radical self love’; as somebody who had Depression and an eating disorder, she essentially wants us to love ourselves. Her blog is a pink coven of wisdom and femininity. She makes me feel so much better about myself.

6. Wear a favourite piece of clothing.

Because there’s something just so comforting about a favourite piece of clothing.

7. Paint your nails.

Nails….to be honest, I feel a little bit of a hypocrite writing this part of the post. But having manicured nails-usually red, no chips, glossy-makes me feel in command. There’s something therapeutic about taking some self care, and something sophisticated about the final results.

8. Dye your hair.

Or just a haircut to maintain it.

9. Wear nice, and supportive, underwear.

This hadn’t been one I considered before, despite having read it when their was a bombing teenage magazine market. The founder of Teacup Club wrote this post  , which really got me thinking. Supportive underwear is an excellent idea. Bonus if it’s pretty.

10. Write a gratitude list.

This is an idea that I took on board from Gala Darling…just be grateful, but we need time to reflect.

How do you feel powerful?

Great post! I’d have to agree, there’s just something about freshly polished nails that makes me feel ready to take on anything! Ahaha! xo

Right after high school, I felt like I wanted a new change. I wanted to be the confident successful person that everyone wanted to meet. I wanted to be proud of myself. The moment I graduated high school I dyed my hair platinum blonde. I felt like a completely different person. I still have the blonde locks, and I wear them with confidence. I don’t know why certain changes make such a huge difference in our lives? I probably do every single thing you mentioned on here, and it helps me loads xxx
