Interview with Anastacia, singer/songwriter

“I’m out of love, set me free, and let me out this misery..” If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know I love Anastacia’s music; the ‘Little Lady With The Big Voice’, complete with such songs as Left Outside Alone, Paid My Dues, I’m Outta Love, and Take This Chance. As part of the Ultimate Collection Tour, I was lucky enough to meet her as part of the Meet And Greet; there, I asked her for an interview. This is the result of that, and would not have possible without the help of Maria Mcmenemy. (I’m so grateful to her, as well as Anastacia herself.)

Hello Anastacia, thank you for agreeing to this interview. You’ve come a long way since Not That Kind; what would you consider to be the biggest industry change since then?

Hi there! Thank you for having me! I guess the biggest change I have seen in the industry is definitely social media. It has changed the way we do EVERYTHING as artists, so much so that I took my own Anastacia App on the road this year. If you had told me 10 years ago that would be something I would do, I wouldn’t have ever believed you! I’m a slight technophobe myself and technology tends to just stop working around me. My crew call me ‘techastacia’ which is so true but I am getting more and more in to social media and I’m really having fun with it on this tour. It’s the biggest change but it’s also a really fun way to connect with your fans all over the world which I love.

You’ve also had various health issues, such as Breast Cancer, and Crohns disease; how are you now doing?

I’m back and better than ever! I honestly can’t explain how blessed I feel to be happy and healthy and out on the road doing what I love. I had a rough couple of years with cancer but I had an incredible group of family and friends around me supporting me all the way. Plus, my fans have been with me every single step of the way. I don’t know where I would be without them and just hope I can be a figure of support for anyone going through similar problems as I faced.

Your Resurrection tour also saw you visit Australia; how was that?

Incredible! I had never taken a live show like it to Australia before and I was amazed by the incredible response. I absolutely loved meeting so many of my Australian fans. I would go back in a heartbeat!

How do you prepare for a show?

I’m quite lucky in that I don’t need really need to warm up before a show, so that doesn’t really take up any time before a show for me. I have a great time in hair and make up with one of my talented make up girls and then usually have a meet and green or some press to do, so it’s always very busy before stage! I like to have 5/10 minutes after that is all done to maybe have a couple of quiet moments to reflect just before I go on stage but I’m usually jumping around backstage, excited to go on stage!

Plus, my fans have been with me every single step of the way. I don’t know where I would be without them and just hope I can be a figure of support for anyone going through similar problems as I faced.

When putting together a touring band, what qualities do you look for?

I have the most amazing group of people working with me, some have been working with me pretty much since day 1 and some are brand new faces, and I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve all been able to do together. I think we have such a good bond because we’re all constantly learning from each other. I look to work with genuine people who work hard and like to laugh.

What motivated the production of your app & has it enhanced your concerts?

I really wanted to do something on this tour that my fans could interact with, and as I have become more and more involved in my social media over the past couple of years, an app seemed like the perfect fit. And it totally has been. Fans have been loving it and it really adds an element of inclusion to the show that really helps me connect with my fans even more than I already am. I love that they can talk to each other on the app too and maybe meet up at shows. It’s like having my fans in my pocket at all times!

Why did you decide to design a glasses collection?

Well as you may know, I am a sucker for sunglasses. I have worn them all my life and it has always been a dream of mine to launch my own collection with a designer. I have admired and worn Blu Marine designs for years and love the brand, so it was just the perfect time to do it, and I am so thrilled with the collection. I wear them every day!

It’s like having my fans in my pocket at all times!

Quick fire-

Dogs or Cats? Dogs! My sister and mom have a bunch and I am like their cool aunt

Heels or flats? Heels!!! I’m tiny I need them!

Twitter or Facebook? I love scrolling through twitter talking to my fans after shows.

Manicure or Pedicure? Oooh this is too hard. Can I have both!?

What are your tips for aspiring singers?

Believe in yourself, and keep your chin up. It will get hard sometimes but if you truly believe in what you do, you can achieve anything!

Oh my goodness, Lydia! I can’t believe you got to interview one of your favorite singers! That’s incredible; well done! I never listened to her but I remember a few of her songs that made the charts in the US 🙂 I’m glad her health is so much better.

Its great to hear that she is one of the artists that didn’t let fame go to their head, and remains a nice person in general!
